I can’t take a shower without thinking about the Peace Corps. As I stand there, with water cascading down my body, I think about what the act of showering might be like when I am in the Peace Corps. I might have to get my water from the river and bring it up to my dwelling in buckets. I might have to boil it to sterilize it so it is safe to wash with. I might have to sit on a chair and pour pitchers of water over my head to wash my hair. I might have to boil the water so I can wash with hot water. All of these things I think about as I stand in the shower daily, enjoying water at a temperature I’ve controlled. Will I shower daily while in the Peace Corps? I think not. And for those friends who are courageous enough to visit me? I see a Marriott in our future 🙂
